Cafe Olimpia
Avenida A, frente al Arco Chato, edificio azul, Casco Antiguo, Ciudad de Panamá
You Walk In for Coffee and Start Looking at the Walls
Across from the Arco Chato, a doorway opens into a space where coffee does not take all the attention. There are armchairs, small tables, shelves filled with books, historic maps, paintings, and sculptures displayed without labels or price tags, as if the gallery had decided to forget the rules and simply let you look at your own pace. Part of that artistic world is connected to the work of Panamanian artist Brooke Alfaro, while Olimpia itself has been developed by Paulo Alfaro around a simple idea: staying for a while should be part of the experience.
Then the coffee arrives. Olimpia works with beans from different Panamanian farms and also serves matcha, tea, and other drinks. If hunger joins the conversation, the break can continue with egg toast, a tuna sandwich, pixbae hummus, or a slice of moist, lightly spiced carrot cake topped with cream. The menu is not designed to overwhelm you with a hundred choices. It is smaller, straightforward, and made to complement the space.
No One Here Seems Eager to Take Your Table Away
And that may be one of its best qualities. Recent visitors often highlight the especially warm and approachable service—the kind where you can ask about the coffee, request a recommendation, and keep talking without feeling as if someone is counting the minutes at your table. Walk toward the back and the space reveals another surprise: a plant-filled terrace overlooking the water. Suddenly, your coffee is in front of you, the sea breeze is drifting in, and the movement of Casco Antiguo feels just far enough away.
Olimpia is not remembered only for what you drank. It is remembered for that strange little moment when you check the time and realize you have been there much longer than you planned. In a neighborhood made for walking, this is one of those places that gives you a very good reason to stop.
