A Cathedral That Moved with Panama

The story of the cathedral didn't start in this building. The ecclesiastical seat was founded in Santa María la Antigua del Darién in 1513, later moved to Panamá Viejo, and relocated once again when the city was rebuilt after the destruction of 1671. At its current location, masonry construction began in 1688 and continued until its consecration in 1796. Today, its white towers and stone facade dominate one side of Plaza de la Independencia, featuring mother-of-pearl inlays and historic bells.

From the silence of the sanctuary to major historical events

Stepping inside changes the pace of the visit. The interior preserves the main altar, an 18th-century Crucified Christ, stained-glass windows, and bishops' crypts. The Cathedral was also present for the country's defining moments: key events linked to 1821 and 1903 were proclaimed from its steps. In 2014, it was granted the title of Minor Basilica, and following an extensive restoration, Pope Francis dedicated its altar during World Youth Day in 2019.

Visiting it means traversing several centuries in just a few steps. More than a monumental church, it is a story that relocated, survived, and grew alongside Panama.
