A Church That Changed Its Appearance Without Losing Its History

Its origins date back to the 17th century, when the Franciscan friars established their church and convent following the relocation of Panama City. However, its current appearance is quite different from the original. In 1918, architect Leonardo Villanueva Meyer transformed the church, incorporating Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements. Its impressive bell tower, standing approximately 25 meters tall, became the highest point in the historic district. From Plaza Bolívar, its arches, ornamental details, and towering structure offer one of the area's most striking architectural views.

An Artistic Treasure Restored to Its Former Glory

The real spectacle continues inside. The sanctuary features Venetian-style mosaics crafted from glass enamel and gold, which were restored in 2015 with the participation of the Vatican's Mosaic Studio. After remaining closed for eight years due to structural deterioration, the church reopened in March 2016, restoring its religious function and cultural significance.

From the shimmering mosaics to the grandeur of its bell tower, every corner reveals a different chapter of its history. A visit offers the opportunity to discover how art and architecture can breathe new life into a centuries-old landmark.
