Mercado de Mariscos: Where the Flavors of the Sea Reach the Gates of Casco Antiguo
If you want to discover a side of Panama that cannot be seen behind a display window, follow the scent of saltwater and the sound of the ocean. On Balboa Avenue, right at the entrance to Casco Antiguo, Mercado de Mariscos comes alive with fishermen coming and going, the shimmer of scales beneath the ice, and the lively atmosphere of one of the city’s most authentic food scenes.
The market opened its doors on February 14, 1995, as part of a project led by the Municipality of Panama with support from Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Its construction aimed to create a suitable space for processing and selling fish and seafood while improving working conditions for people in the industry.
From Fresh Fish to Ceviche
As you walk through the main floor, all your senses come alive. The air smells like the sea, ice crackles beneath freshly delivered products, and the stalls display an abundant variety of fresh fish and seafood, including corvina, snapper, shrimp, lobster, and octopus. Each counter offers a close-up look at the ingredients behind much of Panamanian cuisine.
But the experience does not end with shopping. Upstairs, restaurants and local eateries invite you to sit down and taste the flavors of the market: citrusy ceviches, fish dishes, and other preparations made with the same fresh products sold downstairs.
The atmosphere is lively, intimate, and authentic. The vendors’ voices blend with the movement of shoppers, the glimmer of the ice, and the salty aroma of the day’s catch. Everything moves at its own pace, very different from the tourist shops of Casco. To experience it at its best, it is recommended to arrive early, when the market is busiest and the selection of fresh products is at its widest.
For visitors, Mercado de Mariscos is an open window into Panama’s relationship with the ocean: a place to shop, listen, look, taste, and discover a deeply authentic and vibrant part of everyday Panamanian culture.
