Discovering the Story of Cacao, Floor by Floor

The visit begins with a clue that this will not feel like a conventional museum: a striking chandelier made from hundreds of chocolate whisks welcomes visitors inside the restored colonial house. As you move through the floors, you find photographs, utensils, vintage packaging, collectible pieces, and miniature chocolate shops that recreate scenes from different eras. The exhibits connect cacao’s American origins, its cultural importance, and the long transformation that eventually turned it into the chocolate we know today.

Even the building has a story of its own. During restoration work, old cannonballs were discovered within the property, adding another unexpected layer to the house’s past.

The Museum Where the Final Exhibit Is Edible

Then comes the dangerous part for anyone who loves chocolate: tasting it. Casa Coronel offers additional fine-chocolate tasting experiences designed to help visitors notice aromas, fillings, and textures, as well as a hands-on laboratory where you can roast, grind, and temper cacao to create your own chocolate bar. The visit can also end on the rooftop terrace, with Casco Antiguo stretching out around you.

Casa Coronel pulls off something delicious: after walking through it, a bonbon no longer feels like “just chocolate.” First you learn its story, then you understand the process—and in the end, you get permission to eat the evidence.
