Plaza Arango: Where Luck Was Announced Out Loud
At first glance, Plaza Arango can go unnoticed. However, its history dates back to the late 19th century: it appears on maps from 1885 and 1886, and after the 1894 fire, the area eventually established itself as a plaza. By the early 20th century, it already featured benches and greenery alongside Avenida B.
The day everyone waited for a number
Its most unique chapter came with the National Charitable Lottery (Lotería Nacional de Beneficencia). For years, drawings were held here, across from the former police headquarters, around a central structure. The voices of the announcers, the ticket buyers, and the anticipation of prizes turned the plaza into a lively public stage. Historical photographs capture drawings still being held there in 1959, and the activity continued until relocating in the 1970s. That past is what makes Plaza Arango special. It doesn't need a grand statue to tell a story: its appeal lies in imagining people gathered together, listening intently to every digit.
Walking through it today, it is worth pausing for a moment. Beneath its quiet appearance lingers the memory of an era when luck didn't come through a screen—it was heard right out in the open plaza.
