National Theatre

Avenida B, Casco Viejo

The Theater Where the Ceiling Steals the Scene

Built between 1905 and 1908 and designed by Italian architect Genaro Ruggieri, the National Theatre was created to give the young Republic of Panama a grand home for the performing arts. Its Neo-Renaissance architecture sets the tone from the façade, but the real surprise begins inside. Above the auditorium, frescoes by Panamanian painter Roberto Lewis unfold in color and movement like a performance suspended over the audience. Ornate balconies, gilded details, and the historic chandelier complete an atmosphere that makes it difficult to decide where to look first.

More Than a Century of Saying, “Let the Show Begin”

Generations of musicians, actors, and dancers have taken its stage, making it one of Panama’s most important performing arts venues. After several restoration projects, a major intervention carried out between 2017 and 2019 recovered its façades, balconies, auditorium, paintings, sculptures, and historic details without erasing its original character.

Visiting the National Theatre means discovering a place where the past is still performing. Because here, you do not need to wait for the show to begin: the moment you walk through the doors, you are already part of it.
