When History Becomes a Canvas

Behind Weil Art is Carlos Weil, a gallerist, collector, and cultural promoter who has been connected to Latin American art since the 1980s. He opened his first gallery in Panama in 1987 and, after years of promoting regional artists and working as a Christie’s consultant, founded Weil Art in 2003, which became Panama’s first art auction house. The Casco Antiguo location opened in 2010. Its spaces bring together Panamanian and Latin American artists, from established names to emerging talent, along with paintings, photography, sculptures, and collectible pieces.

The Canal, Told Through Paintbrushes

One of the gallery’s most intriguing ideas appears when art and history intersect. Weil Art preserves Panama Canal memorabilia, including old French bonds connected to the first attempt to build the interoceanic route. Some original bonds and replicas were given to artists to transform with new scenes and characters, turning historical documents into unexpected works of art.

Weil Art proves that a gallery can also be a conversation between different eras. You walk in to look at paintings and end up discovering that, here, even a piece of paper can tell Panama’s story in a completely new way.
